Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to common questions from filmmakers about our platform and process.
What types of projects does FlickFunds Africa accept?
We accept feature films, documentaries, short film collections, series pilots (with series bibles), and animated features. All projects must have significant African connection through theme, creative leadership, location, or cast/crew composition. We're particularly interested in projects that offer fresh perspectives on African experiences, challenge stereotypes, and have potential for both cultural impact and financial returns.
Do I need to have previous filmmaking experience?
While we welcome emerging talent, we do require demonstrated capability to execute your proposed project. First-time directors should have relevant film industry experience (such as assistant directing, cinematography, etc.) and previous short films or relevant media work. Alternatively, less experienced directors can partner with established producers. We evaluate each submission on its overall strength, including the combined experience of the core creative team.
How much creative control do I maintain over my project?
We strongly believe in protecting filmmakers' creative vision. Our model ensures you maintain creative control over your project, including final cut privileges (within the agreed scope and budget). Investors may provide feedback, but you retain decision-making authority on creative matters. This balance of creative freedom and accountability helps produce authentic films while respecting the financial investment.
What happens if my project doesn't reach its full funding goal?
We use a flexible funding approach with minimum and optimal funding thresholds. If your project reaches its minimum threshold (typically 70-80% of the optimal goal), you can choose to proceed with the raised amount by adjusting the production scope accordingly. Alternatively, we can extend the funding period, pursue additional funding sources like grants or co-production partners, or restructure the funding strategy. Our development team works closely with you to find the best solution if a funding gap exists.
What are the costs or fees for filmmakers?
There are no upfront submission or listing fees. Our platform operates on a success-based model: we take a 5% platform fee from the total funds raised, which covers our services throughout the entire process. Additionally, there's a 3% payment processing fee for the financial transactions. These fees are transparent and only apply when your project successfully reaches its funding threshold. All development support, mentoring, and platform resources are provided without additional charges.
What reporting obligations do I have to investors?
Filmmakers are required to provide regular updates to investors through our platform. During production, this typically means monthly progress reports with key milestones reached, challenges encountered, and upcoming activities. Once the film is completed, quarterly reports on distribution efforts, revenue, and festival/award submissions are required. Our platform makes this process straightforward with templates and guidelines, and our team can assist with preparing investor communications to ensure transparency while minimizing administrative burden on filmmakers.
